The rubber plant (Ficus elastica), one of the most well-known and simple-to-grow species of tropical houseplants, is in high demand. In any bright, cosy area, their big, glossy green oval leaves are striking. Choose the widely available cultivar ficus tineke (Ficus elastica 'Tineke') if you want to make an even bigger statement. The sheath at the top of the stem is also a rich burgundy-red colour. The variegated rubber plant, as it is commonly called, frequently has dramatic green and cream leaves.
